Three in Double Figures as Pointers Fade in Second Half in Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Three members of the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (4-2) scored in double figures, but host Calvin (7-0) out-scored the Pointers by 15 in the second half in a 61-50 final.
 
Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis) posted a season-high and team-high 14 points. Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) had 12 and Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added 10 points. Buchanan had a team-best four assists and Mootz led UWSP with four rebounds.
 
Gillie opened the scoring with bucket in the opening minute and Landon VanCalster (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) got the lead back with a three. AJ Makinen (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) hit a jumper and UWSP went into a scoring drought of more than five minutes before VanCalster made a bucket at the midpoint of the first half.
 
Buchanan buried a jumper with 7:03 remaining in the first half as UWSP began a big surge. Elijah Vander Velden (Huntington, Ind./Wabash) followed with a basket on the next possession. Dylan Ruder (Hays, Kan./Hays) drilled a three to put UWSP in front 24-23 at 4:09. Buchanan scored five straight and Gillie scored his sixth points of the half as UWSP took a 31-27 lead to the break.
 
Buchanan nailed a three to start the second half and Gillie extended UWSP's lead to seven at 36-29. Gillie scored all six of UWSP's points through the midway point of the second half.
 
Mootz made a pair of three-pointers as the Pointers tied the game at 50-50 with 4:06 remaining. The Knights scored the final 11 points while holding UWSP scoreless over the final four minutes.
 
The Pointers begin conference play on Wednesday (Nov. 30) with a 7:00 p.m. game at UW-Stout.
