MADISON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-1) got a game- and career-high 25 points from
Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) in a 75-71 comeback win at Edgewood (0-2).
Buchanan posted 25 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. He also made 4-of-5 free throws.
Landon VanCalster (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) was 3-for-3 from three-point range and added 11 points.
Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) was also in double figures with 10.
Buchanan hit a bucket in the opening seconds and Mootz drilled a three for an early 7-0 lead.
Luke Warden (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) added four points, but EC posted a 9-0 run before Buchanan ended it with a jumper. VanCalster hit his first two threes, but UWSP trailed 25-22.
Buchanan made two threes and had eight late points as the UWSP deficit stood at 39-36 at the half.
Mootz and
Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis) scored on consecutive possessions as UWSP took a brief 40-39 lead. Buchanan buried a three and VanCalster hit his third from deep as UWSP stayed within a possession midway through the second half.
AJ Makinen (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) sank a three with 5:33 to go to give the Pointers a 63-63 tie. Buchanan completed an and-one and scored five straight.
Ryan Peterson (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) scored four straight to give the Pointers a 72-66 lead. Peterson added a late free throw and Buchanan iced the win with two free throws in the closing seconds.
The Pointers return home to host Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday (Nov. 22). Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and all UWSP faculty and staff will be admitted free with ID.
