Three in Double Figures as Pointers Improve to 3-0

WHITEWATER, Wis. – For the first time since the 2016-17 season, the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team is off to a 3-0 start after a 61-56 win over Carroll (1-2) at the UWW Tipoff Tournament on Saturday.
 
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led a trio in double figures with 13 points. Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added 12 points.
 
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) scored 10 and pulled down 10 boards for her second double-double of the weekend. Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) had a game-high 12 rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team.
 
Pfeifer buried a three just seconds into the game as the teams started trading points. A pair of free throws by Krueger tied it at 5-5 and a Thomson jumper with 3:41 gave UWSP a 9-7 lead. Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) scored four points late as UWSP held a 14-13 advantage after one.
 
Krueger scored the Pointers' first four points in the second quarter. Pfeifer, Gawlitta and Thomson each had a bucket on the final possessions of the half as UWSP was down one, 29-28, at the break.
 
Gawlitta and Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) each scored to give the Pointers early one-point leads in the third. Olivia Hoerl (Chilton, Wis./Chilton) added four points in the quarter and the game was tied 42-42 heading to the fourth.
 
Thomson and Pfeifer combined for a 6-0 UWSP run to begin the fourth. A three by Krueger midway through the quarter put the lead back at six, 54-48. Pfeifer scored four points late and Kruger hit three free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.
 
The Pointers return home to face St. Norbert to begin a five game homestand. Tipoff against the Green Knights is set for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 16).
