STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (7-8-4) earned a 1-0 win over UW-Platteville (12-6-2) in the first round of the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) on Tuesday.
The Pointers took the lead in the 40th minute on a flick at the near post by
Mackenzie Jones (The Woodlands, Texas/Tomball). The goal was the first of her career. The play began near midfield as
Shea-Lynn Gerred (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) won the ball on an attempted clear. She sent
Kati Frierdich (Neenah, Wis./Winneconne) down the left side with a long pass and Frierdich hit Jones at the near post for the go-ahead goal.
UWP came out fast in the second half earning four corner kicks in the first 15 minutes. UWSP's defense held the Pioneers without a shot attempt on any of them.
The visitors earned five more corners the remainder of the half to avail. UWSP goalkeeper
Miranda Nieman (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) turned aside three shots to keep a clean sheet. She got help from her back line in the first half clearing a ball off the line to keep the match scoreless.
The Pointers advance to the WIAC Tournament semifinals to face top-seed UW-La Crosse. Kick off is at 6:00 p.m. in La Crosse on Thursday (Nov. 3).
