STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (4-6-3, 1-1-1) picked up its first league win by stunning visiting UW-Whitewater (7-3-3, 2-1-0) with a 1-0 victory on
Olivia Piloni's (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle Township) 90th minute goal.
UWSP goalkeeper
Miranda Nieman (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) made six saves in the first 22 minutes to avert a Warhawks' attack early.
Mara Gustafson (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) had UWSP's only shot on goal in the first half as the match remained scoreless at the break.
Nieman made seven more saves in the second half and the game seemed destined for a scoreless draw finish.
But with just seconds remaining, UWSP earned a free kick near midfield.
Lauren Johnson (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./SPASH) set the ball and served it into the box.
Kati Frierdich (Neenah, Wis./Winneconne) flicked a header across goal and Piloni buried the goal with just two seconds remaining for the win.
The Pointers continue league play with a match at UW-River Falls on Saturday (Oct. 15). Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
