EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Freshman wide receiver
Miles Gallagher (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) made the longest touchdown reception in program history as the UW-Stevens Point football team (1-7, 0-5) fell at UW-Eau Claire (2-6, 1-4) by a 48-26 final on Saturday.
Gallagher led the Pointers with six catches, two for touchdowns, for 186 yards receiving. Both touchdown catches for Gallagher were thrown by
Trey Schroeder (DeForest, Wis./DeForest), two of his nine completions for 223 yards. Schroeder also ran for a touchdown and led the ground game with 72 yards.
Charlie Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) completed seven passes, including a touchdown strike to
Devin Baldridge (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire).
Tysen White (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) and
Carter Borchardt (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) were both in double figures with 14 and 10 tackles, respectively.
Jack Luedtke (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) had an interception for UWSP's defense.
The Blugolds punched in the opening drive to take a 7-0 lead. Schroeder ran the ball seven times on UWSP's first offensive drive, including the final three yards for a touchdown. But the extra point was no good.
UWEC scored on its next possession and both teams got an interception to end the first quarter.
Three plays into the second quarter, Schroeder hit Gallagher for a 94-yard touchdown, the longest receiving touchdown in program history and tied for the longest receiving play in school history. Again the extra point was missed and UWSP trailed 14-12.
The Blugolds scored on their next two offensive possessions and the Pointers were down 27-12 with 2:23 remaining in the first half.
Schroeder connected with
DJ Jacob (Toms River, N.J./North) on the third play of the possession and a penalty set the Pointer up near midfield, Schroeder again hit Gallagher for a big gainer, a 53-yard touchdown as UWSP closed to within 27-18 at the half.
UWEC scored in quick succession early in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Smith took over under center in the final possession of the third quarter. He completed five passes and led the Pointers to the end zone capped by a 13-yard pass to Baldridge.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
The Pointers face UW-Oshkosh in the final home game next Saturday (Nov. 5). Kick off is set for 1:00 p.m.
