LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (1-6, 0-4) got rushing touchdowns from
Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) and
Seth Forbes (Manawa, Wis./Little Wolf) in a 55-13 defeat at No. 9 UW-La Crosse (6-1, 3-1) on Saturday.
UWSP's ground attack averaged 4.7 yards per play and quarterback
Trey Schroeder (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) led the way with 94 yards on 17 carries. Cashin added 41 yards and a touchdown, his fifth rushing score of the season. Forbes racked up 29 yards on just four carries and reached the end zone for the first time on the year.
Schroeder completed five passes, but more importantly, controlled the game and led the Pointers in not turning the ball over.
Tysen White (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) led UWSP's defense with seven tackles.
Gavino Lopez (Dorchester, Wis./Colby) added six.
Larry Boh (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) got the only turnover of the game with a 21-yard return on an interception, his second pick of the year.
The Eagles took the opening drive 70 yards in four plays to put UWSP in an early 7-0 hole. The Pointers gained 22 yards on their first drive, stalling near midfield. UWL again went the length of the field to push the deficit to 13-0.
UWL scored again on its third drive, but UWSP was driving as the first ended 20-0 in favor of the home side.
The Pointers finished the 14-play, 75-yard drive with Cashin crossing the goal line on fourth down from the two.
Victor Ponterio (Melrose, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) kicked the extra point as UWSP made it 20-7.
UWL scored on the next two offensive possessions to put UWSP down 34-7. With less than two minutes left in the first half, Boh made an interception and returned it 21 yards to the UWL 25. Two plays later, Forbes found the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown as UWSP made it 34-13 at the half.
The Eagles scored on each of their two possessions in the third quarter, but in between, Schroeder moved UWSP deep into UWL territory. He ran for 39 yards to get UWSP into the red zone, but the drive stalled and UWSP turned the ball over on downs.
The Pointers again drove into the red zone to begin the fourth quarter. The drive again was halted and the field goal attempt was no good.
UWL added a touchdown on its only possession of the fourth to complete the scoring.
The Pointers travel to UW-Eau Claire next Saturday (Oct. 29) for a 1:00 p.m. contest against the Blugolds.
