STEVENS POINT, Wis. – It took a late second-set rally, but the No. 15 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (20-6) notched its 20th victory of the season in a four-set win over Illinois Wesleyan (13-10) on Friday.
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) recorded double-doubles, their 19th and 12th, respectively, on the year. Kopp led all players with 15 kills on the night and added 18 digs. Michalske had a match-high 42 assists and had 12 digs.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led all players with 29 digs.
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added 17 digs and tied Michalske with a match-best four aces.
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) was in double digits with 12 kills.
The teams swapped points early and following a kill and block by
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada), UWSP was behind by one, 15-14. After a 7-2 run by IWU put UWSP down 22-16, Paukner had two kills in a 6-2 UWSP burst to get within 24-23 before the Titans took the first set, 25-23.
Paukner and
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) had two kills each as UWSP took an early 10-6 lead in the second. A Peterson ace pulled UWSP even at 15-15. The lead toggled back and forth to a 22-22 tie late. Consecutive points by IWU gave the visitors set point. Kopp sparked a 4-0 run with a kill and secured the set with another for a 26-24 win.
The rally put momentum squarely with the Pointers as three Belfiori aces put UWSP ahead 15-7. Michalske and Kopp each had an ace down the stretch as UWSP pulled away for a 25-14 win in set three.
Kopp and Paukner had three kills each as UWSP opened the fourth with a slim 11-9 edge. Kopp had two kills and Michalske served up two aces as UWSP closed the match with a 14-4 run to take the fourth, 25-13.
The Pointers wrap up the regular season home slate on Saturday (Oct. 22) with a 3:00 p.m. Senior Day match versus Wheaton.
