STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (1-5, 0-3) fell to visiting UW-Stout (4-2, 2-1) by a 55-0 final in the annual Spud Bowl on Saturday.
UWSP quarterbacks
Trey Schroeder (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) and
Charlie Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) combined for 12 completions.
Joe Hare (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viatore) was the favored target with five catches for 50 yards.
Seth Forbes (Manawa, Wis./Little Wolf) was the Pointers' leading rusher with 32 yards on five carries.
Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) carried the ball nine times and was limited to 23 net yards.
Defensively,
Larry Boh (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) led the Pointers with 11 tackles.
Matthew Stephany (Kiel, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) made his first start and added nine tackles.
The Blue Devils needed just four plays to convert a shortened field into a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. UWSP's defense held strong the next two possessions, even ending the quarter with a defensive three-and-out, holding the score at 7-0 after one.
Stout scored on all three possessions in the second quarter. UWSP held strong at the goal line late to hold the Blue Devils to a field goal, but the Pointers were down 24-0 at the break.
The Blue Devils scored four touchdowns and a field goal on six second-half possessions to finish off the win.
The Pointers head out on the road for the next two games starting with a 1:00 p.m. visit to UW-La Crosse next week (Oct. 22).
