RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The shorthanded UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (7-8-0, 2-2-0) scored twice in the third period in a 3-2 defeat at No. 4 UW-River Falls (13-1-0, 3-1-0).
The Falcons got on the board with 22.8 seconds left in the first period. UWRF doubled its lead at 12:12 of the second period. The Falcons made it 3-0 at 4:31 of the third period with a shorthanded goal.
The Pointers kept fighting. At 9:41 of the third period,
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scored her seventh goal of the season, a power-play goal.
Nicole Neuberger (Minnetrista, Minn./Orono) notched her team-best 18th point of the season with an assist.
Later in the third,
Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) scored to get UWSP within a goal. Her second of the season came at 17:27 on an assist from
Mary Kremer (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead Warhawks). UWSP was unable to find the equalizer though.
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) made 33 saves in a solid effort for the Pointers. UWRF goaltender Jordan O'Connor made 18 saves.
The Pointers and Falcons will face off against on Sunday (Jan. 16) in a non-conference game. Puck drop at Hunt Arena in River Falls is set for 4:05 p.m.
