DE PERE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (4-2) closed out the season-opening road trip with a pair of wins at the Quad hosted by SNC. The Pointers downed Lakeland (0-4) in straight set before dispatching of host St. Nobert (0-6) in four sets.
Freshman
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) recorded her third double-double of the season with 17 kills and 18 digs against SNC. She added 16 kills and just missed a double-double with eight digs versus LU.
Bekah Day (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) racked up 71 assists on the day, including game-highs of 38 versus the Muskies and 33 against SNC. She also served up six aces over the two matches.
Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) posted her first career double-digit kill performance with 10 in the win over the Green Knights.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led all players with 16 digs against the Muskies.
UWSP 3, Lakeland 0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-19)
Kopp bookended a 6-0 run with kills as the Pointers pulled ahead 8-3 early in the first set. Lakeland battled back to tie UWSP multiple times down the stretch, but Kopp put an end to the set with consecutive kills after a 23-all tie.
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) served the Pointers out to a 6-0 start to the second set. Day added an ace as UWSP built a 12-2 lead and held at least a four-point edge the remainder of the set.
The Pointers fell behind in the third set and trailed 16-13.
Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) posted a pair of kills as UWSP finished the match with a 12-3 run.
UWSP 3, SNC 1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-13)
Kopp had a pair of kills as UWSP climbed ahead 19-18 in the first set. After a 5-0 by SNC, Kopp sparked a four-point spurt capped by a Day ace to tie the set 23-23. But the Green Knights scored the final two points to take the opening set.
Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) opened the second set with a kill as UWP jumped out to a 6-1 advantage. Lau powered down three-straight kills to initiate a 6-0 run as UWSP seized control to even the match.
Kopp and Day alternated kills and aces in a five-point run as UWSP broke a 15-15 tie in the third set.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) added a kill and an ace late to secure the third set.
Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had four kills and
Jadyn Clarner (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) served up a pair of aces as the Pointers hit .500 in the fourth set to cruise to the win.
UWSP will face Edgewood in the home opener on Friday (Sept. 10) as part of day one action in the Pointer Invitational I. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m. The tournament gets underway on Friday with the first match beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Berg Gym.
