STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (5-2) handled business in the home opener with a four-set victory over Edgewood (5-2) in the final match of Friday's Pointer Invitational I.
Freshman
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) posted a season- and game-high 20 kills for the Pointers. She also added 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the year.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led the Pointers in digs with 19 with
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and
Katie Albrecht (West Bend, Wis./East) also in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively.
Bekah Day (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) led UWSP with 17 assists with
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) adding 15.
The Pointers got consecutive aces from Albrecht in a five-point run to pull ahead 11-8.
Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) added a couple late kills as UWSP attempted to create some separation. Kopp ended the set with a kill for the Pointers.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) posted a couple kills early in the second set for a slight 7-6 edge. The teams swapped lead throughout the set and Kopp thwarted a pair of set points with kills. But the Eagles closed the set with consecutive points for a 26-24 win.
In the third set, Kopp served up a trio of aces as UWSP opened with a 5-0 lead. Peterson racked up a pair of aces as UWSP's lead grew to 16-9.
Sophia Lee (Lake Mills, WIs./Lake Mills) recorded consecutive kills as the Pointers ended the set with five of the last six points.
Kopp powered down three kills in a 6-0 run early in the fourth set. After Edgewood climbed back to tie the set at 13-13, the Pointers closed out the match with a 12-6 run.
UWSP will play two matches on Saturday (Sept. 11) to close out the Pointer Invitational. The Pointers face Minnesota-Morris at 12:00 p.m. and Saint Mary's at 2:00 p.m.
