Volleyball Takes Down Pacific, Drops Weekend Finale to Host UNW

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (2-2) split matches on day two the Kathryne Pals Legacy Invitational.  UWSP cruised past Pacific (1-2) before dropping the weekend finale to host Northwestern (3-1) both by straight sets.

Freshman Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) recorded her second double-double in as many matches with 14 kills and 11 digs in the win over Pacific.  Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led UWSP with 21 digs in the victory.

Bekah Day (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) had double-digit assists in both matches with 24 in the first match and 22 against UNW.

UWSP 3, Pacific 9 (25-11, 25-13, 25-11)
Kopp had five kills and a service ace to put the Pointers out to a 14-4 advantage early.  Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) and Peterson added an ace each as UWSP rolled.

Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) served up a pair of aces in a 6-0 run as the Pointers took a 12-3 lead in the second set.  Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Kopp had two kills each late as the Pointers closed out the set with five-straight points.

The Pointers used a 7-0 run early in the third set to take control in the third set.  Another 7-0 spurt ended the set and the match.

UWSP 0, UNW 3 (9-25, 12-25, 20-25)
The Eagles opened the match winning the first 11 points.  Mena scored a pair of kills, but the deficit was too tall to overcome in the first set.

Kopp registered four kills early in the second set as the Pointers held a 5-3 lead.  UNW used a 15-2 run to overtake the lead and pulled away for the two-set lead.

Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) posted back-to-back kills to open the third set.  Another 7-0 run gave the hosts the lead.  Day served up two aces and Derousseau added three kills as the Pointers pulled within one at 17-16, but UNW posted five of the final six points to secure the sweep.

UWSP's Kopp was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance over the weekend.

The Pointers continue the season-opening road trip with a pair of matches at the WIAC/MWC Quad on Wednesday (Sept. 8).  UWSP will play Lakeland at 5:30 before taking on host St. Norbert at 7:30.
