ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (1-1) split a pair of matches on day one of the Kathryne Pals Legacy Invitational. After dropping the opener to Bethel, 3-0, the Pointers responded with a 3-0 win over Wisconsin Lutheran.
Freshman
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs in the win over WLC.
Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) added double-digit kills in both matches, including 13 in game one versus BU and 10 in the nightcap.
Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) led UWSP with 16 kills in game two.
Bekah Day (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) racked up 67 assists on the day, recording a game-high in each match.
Katie Albrecht (West Bend, Wis./East),
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) and Kopp all had double-figure digs in both matches for the Pointers.
UWSP 0, Bethel 3 (23-25, 17-25, 22-25)
The Pointers used an early 3-1 run to take the lead which they held until a 22-all tie late in the set. The Royals used a 5-1 run to secure the set win.
Lau recorded kills on four-straight UWSP points mid-set as the Pointers tried to rally from behind. Bethel pulled ahead and held the lead the remainder of the set.
Mena and Lau recorded kills as the seesaw third set tied at 11, 12 and 13. Mena again recorded a kill to tie the set at 19-19, but the Royals finished the set strong to secure the sweep.
UWSP 3, WLC 0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-15)
The Pointers jumped in front, 4-0, on a pair of kills from Kopp. Another kill by Kopp and a pair form Mena got UWSP off to an 11-1 start. Lau closed an easy set one win with a couple late kills.
Again in set two, the Pointers went ahead 4-0 out of the gate. Three more 4-0 spurts in the set put the Pointers in charge.
In the third set, the Pointers used a decisive 6-0 run after an 8-8 tie to pull away for the sweep.
The Pointers wrap up the opening weekend with a pair of matches on Saturday (Sept. 4). UWSP faces Pacific at 11:00 a.m. before playing host Northwestern at 1:00 p.m.
