STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 9-0 sweep of visiting Milwaukee School of Engineering (0-1), but the Pointers needed to win three super-breakers to complete the shutout.
Barbara Covek (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) rallied from a set down and need a super-breaker to win at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set, 4-6, she rallied to take the second set, 6-0. In the super breaker, Covek jumped ahead early on won by a 10-5 final.
Jordan Scharf (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) and
Kaylee Woelfel (Plymouth,Wis/Plymouth) also needed a super-breaker to secure wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Scharf won the first set, 6-4, and held on in the super-breaker, 10-8 for her first collegiate singles win. Woelfel dropped the opening set, 5-7, before rebounding for a 6-0 set two win and a 10-5 super-breaker.
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and
Jenna Koepp (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) swept the No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively for the Pointers. Koepp and Covek teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles with Faith and
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) getting an 8-0 win at no. 2 doubles.
Grace Henes (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) and Scharf won the no. 3 doubles by an 8-3 final.
Kaitlyn Hess (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) won at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-0 rounding out the sweep.
The Pointers close out the season-opening home stand with matches against Marian and Wisconsin Lutheran on Sunday (Sept. 5). Match times are set for 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
