UWSP Volleyball Win Streak Hits 13, Pointers Sweep Home Invitational

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (15-2) battled back from down a set to extend its winning streak to 13-straight with two victories in the Pointer Invitational II on Saturday.  UWSP knocked off its third-straight ranked opponent with a straight-sets win over No. 14 Millikin.  The Pointers dropped the first set and battled back in the fourth set to complete the weekend sweep in four set against St. Olaf.  The win streak is the longest for the Pointers since a 21-game stretch in 2014.

Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) continued her sensational start as a Pointer with her 10th double-double of the year.  She posted a match-high 18 kills against Millikin.  Then versus St. Olaf, she had 15 kills and a team-best 16 digs.

Sophia Lee (Lake Mills, WIs./Lake Mills) burst onto the scene with a career-best 13 kills against the Oles.  She also contributed six blocks.

Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) tallied up 76 assists over the two matches, with game-highs of 36 and 40 on the day.

UWSP 3, Millikin 0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-21)
The Pointers trailed early in the first set, but kept it close throughout.  Down 16-14, Abby Neutz (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) registered a kill followed by three-straight from Kopp.  Three points later, Kopp got another kill as UWSP closed the set on a 6-0 run.

Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) gave UWSP a 5-4 lead with a kill to initiate a 4-0 run.  Kopp had a kill and an ace during a 5-1 run and Mena capped the set victory with a kill.

Kopp took over in the third set recording a kill on seven of the Pointers' first 12 points.  Neutz added four kills as the Pointers closed out the match in three sets.

UWSP 3, St. Olaf 1 (13-25, 25-20, 25-13, 28-26)
Mena and Kopp combined for three kills, UWSP's only offense in a dismal first set loss.

Lee got a kill and Michalske served up back-to-back aces as UWSP got out to a 6-1 lead in the second set.  Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) got in on the attack with four kills as UWSP evened the match.

Kopp posted kills for UWSP first five points of the third set and a Mena ace gave the Pointers a 13-10 advantage.  Michalske had an ace and Lee a couple kills as UWSP closed the set with 11 of the final 13 points.

Lee had four early kills to give the Pointers a 10-1 lead to start the fourth set.  The Oles clawed back and took a slight lead at 22-21.  Mena and Derousseau combined for a block, one of 11 in the match, to stop St. Olaf's first set point.  Then after a 26-26 tie, the Pointers posted back-to-back blocks for the match win.

Kopp and Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) were named to the All-Tournament team for their play over the weekend.

The Pointers hit the road for the next six matches beginning on Wednesday (Sept. 29) with a 7:00 p.m. tilt at Augsburg.
