MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team extended its season-opening win streak to nine with an 8-1 win over UW-Stout (2-2, 0-1) in the conference opener on Wednesday. The win improves the Pointers' historic start to 9-0.
UWSP swept the doubles matches, the eighth time this year the Pointers have won all three doubles.
Barbara Covek (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and
Jenna Koepp (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) got the win at No. 1 by an 8-4 final. UWSP's No.2 pair of
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and
Kaitlyn Hess (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) and the No. 3 duo of
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and
Grace Henes (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) won by identical 8-2 finals.
In singles play,
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and Koepp improves to 8-0 on the year with Leithold winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and Koepp shutting out her opponent at No. 3.
Hess took care of the No. 4 singles match with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5.
Kaylee Woelfel (Plymouth,Wis/Plymouth) played at No. 6 and won the first set, 6-4. In the second set, she needed a tiebreak for a 7-6 win.
The Pointers now head to Iowa for a pair of matches on Saturday (Sept. 18). UWSP will face Dubuque at 12:00 p.m. and Loras at 3:30 p.m.
