UWSP Volleyball Runs Win Streak to Five

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (7-2) ran its winning streak to five matches with wins over Minnesota-Morris and Saint Mary's on Saturday at the Pointer Invitational I.

Freshman Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) continued to impress with double-doubles in both matches.  She started the day with 15 kills and 15 digs against the Cougars.  In the second match, she posted a game-high 13 kills with 10 digs.

Fellow freshman Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) racked up 25 assists in the win over UMM.  Then in the second match, she upped that total to a match-high 35 versus SMU.

Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) was solid leading the way with 19 and 13 digs, respectively, leading all players in each match.  Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) each posted double-figure kills against UMM.

UWSP 3, UMM 1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-15)
Kopp and Mena combined for three-straight kills as UWSP pulled ahead 12-10 in the first set.  Jadyn Clarner (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) served up an ace, but the Pointers kept playing from behind in a close first set defeat.

Kopp capped a four-point run with an ace as UWSP pulled in front, 14-7, in the second set.  Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) posted an ace later in the set and the Pointers held off the Cougars to tie the match.

UWSP fell behind in the third set, but a 6-1 run capped by back-to-back kills from Lau tied the set at 15-all. Mosinski, Kopp and Lau combined for six kills and Katie Albrecht (West Bend, Wis./East) dropped in an ace during a 7-0 to put the Pointers in control late.

Kopp served UWSP to a 7-0 lead to begin the fourth set.  Mosinski added consecutive kills to make it 12-3 and UWSP cruised to the set win to take the match.

UWSP 3, SMU 0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-14)
Mosinski opened the match with a kill and an early ace to give UWSP a 4-1 edge early.  Mena sandwiched and ace by Albrecht with kills and UWSP went ahead 9-3, holding the lead throughout the set one win.

Erin Gillen (Richfield, Wis./Slinger) serviced up an ace in the midst of a 9-2 start to the second set for UWSP.  Kopp ripped three kills in a 6-0 run as the Pointers seized an 18-5 lead en route to the win.  Freshman Kennedy Dransfeldt (Morris, Ill./Morris Community) recorded her first career kill late in the set.

Kopp posted four kills in a 5-1 run as the Pointers grabbed control of the third set.  She registered six kills in the third set and UWSP hit .515 on their way to a straight-sets win.

Kopp and Mosinski were named to the All-Tournament Team for their play this weekend.
