STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team (1-0) opened the 2021 campaign with a decisive 8-1 victory over visiting St. Norbert (0-1). The Pointers swept the doubles matches and nearly swept the singles, falling only in a super breaker.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of
Barbara Covek (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and
Jenna Koepp (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) cruised to an 8-0 win. UWSP No.2 duo of
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) and the No 3 doubles squad of
Grace Henes (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) and
Jordan Scharf (Wauwatosa, Wis./West), each won by an 8-1 score.
In singles, Covek took care of business with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1. Her doubles partner Koepp took No. 3 singles by a 6-1, 6-0 final.
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) swept her No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Sister Chloe won at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2.
Kaylee Woelfel (Plymouth,Wis/Plymouth) earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles for UWSP. Scharf nearly rallied at No. 5 singles winning the second set to force a super breaker, but ultimately fell, 10-8.
The Pointers continue the season-opening home stand on Friday against MSOE. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. at University Courts.
