Walk-Off Slam, Eight Long Balls Propel Pointers to Sweep of UWEC

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) blasted a walk-off grand slam in game one, the fourth of eight home runs on the day for the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (22-7, 17-3) in a doubleheader sweep of UW-Eau Claire (4-24, 4-16) on Saturday.  The Pointers won both games by a 9-6 final and the sweep kept UWSP tied atop the WIAC standings.
 
Including his walk-off slam, Simmons hit two home runs and tied a career high with six RBI in game one.  He had four hits on the day, drove in seven and scored three times.
 
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) belted three home runs, two in game one and another in game two.  He had six total hits, three RBI and four runs scored.
 
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville), Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) all homered in game two.  Finger and Nelson had three runs batted in each.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 9, UWEC 6
The Blugolds hit home runs in the first, third and fifth to built a 4-0 lead over UWSP.
 
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth.  He moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout.  After Finger was plunked, Jacob Lillge (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute) drove in a run with a single down the left field line to get UWSP on the board.
 
With one away in the sixth, Comer belted his first homer of the day to get UWSP to within 4-2.  The Blugolds tacked on two unearned runs in the seventh to put the deficit back to four.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Lillge singled with one down.  With two away, Simmons crushed a two-run home run to center as UWSP got within two.
 
Comer led off the eighth with his second long ball of the game to make it 6-5.
 
Finger led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left.  Lillge walked and Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) reached on a bunt single to load the bases.  On the third pitch of his at-bat, Simmons lifted a fly ball to the opposite field that continued to carry out the Illinois Street for the walk-off grand slam.
 
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) struck out seven in 5.0 innings.  Zack Haupt (Carlsbad, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) went 3.0 with three strikeouts.  Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) picked up the win with a hitless ninth and he struck out one.

Game 2 – UWSP 9, UWEC 6
UWSP played from behind in game two as well with UWEC scoring twice on four hits in the second.
 
Comer led off the bottom of the second with a single.  Luedtke drew a walk and a single by Henwood loaded the bases.  An RBI groundout by Finger got UWSP on the board.
 
Another home run and three hits in the third gave UWEC a 4-1 lead.
 
In the bottom of the third, Duddleston singled to start the frame.  Simmons drew a walk and on the first pitch he saw, Nelson obliterated a three-run shot to left to tie the game at 4-4.
 
Comer led off the fifth with his third homer of the day.  On the next pitch, Luedtke left the yard to put UWSP ahead 6-4.  Two batters later, Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) singled up the middle.  Finger followed with a two-run shot to left and an 8-4 lead.
 
Duddleston drew a two-out walk in the seventh and raced all the way home on a double by Simmons for a 9-5 lead.
 
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) picked up the win with 3.0 scoreless frames of relief.  He struck out five.  Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) and Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) each struck out two.  Nelson and Ferry each tossed a scoreless inning with Ferry picking up the save.
 
The Pointers travel to UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday (May 4) to kick off a six-game series with the Titans next week.  First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
