Pointers Sweep Lions to Open Weekend Series

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – With intermittent showers during game one and into game two, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (9-3, 5-1) completed a sweep of visiting Finlandia (0-12, 0-6) to kick off a six-game weekend set.  The Pointers took game one by a 5-1 final before an 11-8 victory in game two.
 
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) extended his hitting streak to 10 games with three hits on the day.  All three of his hits were doubles.  He drove in two in each game, scored twice in game two and drew a pair of walks.
 
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) recorded two hits in each game.  He scored twice in each game.
 
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) belted a home run and had five RBI in game two. Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) had a pair of hits in game two with three runs batted in.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 5, FU 1
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) was hit by a pitch to lead off the first.  After moving to second on a groundout, he scored on a double to right-center by Simmons.
 
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) drew a walk to begin the second and moved to second on a passed ball.  Duddleston reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corners.  A wild pitch plated the first run of the frame.  With two down, another wild pitch gave UWSP a 3-0 lead.
 
The Lions plated an unearned run in the fifth to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
 
With two away in the sixth, Duddleston reached on an infield single.  Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) roped a double to the wall in left-center to plate Duddleston.
 
Baumann led off the seventh with a single to center.  With one away, he stole second.  Simmons followed and ripped a double to left-center to push Baumann home.
 
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went 8.0 to pick up the victory.  He struck out four and scattered four hits.  Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) tossed a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 11, FU 8
Finlandia scored three runs in the first inning on just two hits.  The Pointers got one back in the bottom of the first without a hit.  Baumann reached on an error, moving to second on the play.  He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
 
After the Lions scored two in the third, Duddleston led off the bottom of the frame with a single.  Baumann was hit by a pitch and a fielder's choice put runners at the corners.  Simmons plated a run on a groundout.  Comer followed with a two-run home run to left-center as UWSP got within 5-4.
 
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) reached on an infield single with one out in the fifth.  Simmons doubled to put two in scoring position.  Comer drove in two more with a double down the right field line.  He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Luedtke.
 
In the sixth inning, UWSP drew four walks and Comer was hit by a pitch as two runs scored.  Luedtke singled through the left side to plate two more as the lead reached 11-6.
 
The Lions scored once in the seventh and another in the ninth to complete the scoring. 
 
Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) lasted 3.0 innings with two strikeouts.  Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) went 4.0 and earned the win.  He struck out six.  Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) tossed 2.0 with one strikeout.
 
The Pointers and Lions continue the weekend series with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader at Zimmermann Field on Saturday.
