STEVENS POINT, Wis. –
Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) hit his first career home runs, two of five long balls on the day, as the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (11-3, 7-1) swept Finlandia (0-14, 0-8) to move into a first-place tie in the WIAC. UWSP got the best of a tussle in game one with a 7-6 win. In game two, Canterbury went deep twice in a 13-7 win.
Canterbury collected five hits on the day. He drove in four runs and scored four times.
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) extended his hitting streak to 12 games with four hits in the doubleheader. He tied the program record with his 12th career triple in game two. He hit a home run in game one and scored three times on the day.
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute),
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) hit safely in both games with each getting three hits on the day. Duddleston had four RBI and scored three times. Comer drove in three and scored four. Nelson had three RBI and one run scored.
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) each had two hits. Henwood's were both in game one and he scored a run. Luedtke had two hits in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 7, FU 6
Simmons extended his hitting streak in his first at-bat with a solo home run to give UWSP an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Canterbury led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Henwood. With two away, Duddleston plated both runners with a single to left-center.
Comer got aboard on a Finlandia error to start the third.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) continued the inning with a bunt single. Henwood drew a walk to load the bases and
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) got an RBI on a fielder's choice to up the lead to 4-0.
After FU got on the board in the fourth, Comer singled to begin UWSP's fifth. Henwood singled with two outs to put runners at the corners. Finger singled to push the lead back to four.
The Lions put up four runs on four hits and a UWSP error to tie the game at 5-5 in the sixth. The game remained tied until the eighth when FU took a lead on a solo home run.
In the bottom of the eighth, UWSP responded. Duddleston drew a one-out walk. Simmons singled to put runners at the corners. Nelson followed with a sac fly to left to tie the game. On the play, the Lions committed throwing errors to second and third base trying to catch Simmons allowing the go-ahead and winning run to score.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) went 5.1 innings in the start. He struck out eight.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) struck out six in 2.2 frames to get the win. He allowed just one hit.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) earned the save with a strikeout to start a 1-2-3 ninth.
Game 2 – UWSP 13, FU 7
FU took a lead in the second inning with two runs and added a third in the third inning.
Simmons tripled with two down in the third inning, this program-record tying 12th career three-bagger, to extend his hitting streak to 12. Nelson followed with a double down the left field line to get UWSP on the board.
Luedtke and
Connor Flanagan (Rolesville, N.C.) drew walks in the fourth. Canterbury launched his first home run, a three-run blast, to give the Pointers a 4-3 lead.
Jacob Lillge (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute) followed with a single and Duddleston belted a two-run home run to left for a 6-3 lead.
The Lions used three hits, including a homer, to plate four runs in the sixth to regain the lead at 7-6.
Canterbury quickly erased the deficit with a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Lillge reached on an error and advanced to second on a bunt single by Duddleston. Nelson singled with one away to push home a run for the lead. Comer continued the rally with a three-run home run to right-center for an 11-7 advantage.
UWSP tacked on single runs in the seventh and the eighth as conditions deteriorated with rain moving in.
Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) picked up the win with 4.2 solid innings of relief. He struck out three.
Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln),
Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) and Ferry each pitched an inning without allowing a run.
UWSP and Finlandia are slated to complete the six-game weekend series at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday (April 11) at Zimmermann Field.
