Pointers Break Steals Record, Sweep UWRF in League Play

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (20-13, 6-6) swiped seven bases on Friday to break the program record for stolen bases in a season en route to a sweep of UW-River Falls (10-14, 5-7).  UWSP run-ruled the Falcons in five innings, 10-0, in game one before a 9-1 victory in game two.  The Pointers' six league wins is the most since 2011.
 
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) and Megan Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) each collected four hits on the day.  Geiyer belted her first career home run with three RBI and four runs scored on the day.  Lawrence had two RBI, two runs scored and stole two bases.
 
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) and River Falls native Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) also stole two bases on the day.  Luedtke had a team-high four runs batted in for UWSP.  Kally VanLaanen (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) had three RBI, all in game one.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 10, UWRF 0 (5)
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) led off with a single to right that was misplayed allowing her to advance all the way to third.  Luedtke followed with a sac fly and a 1-0 lead.
 
Wakefield singled with one down in the fourth.  After stealing second, she raced home on a single by VanLaanen.
 
The Pointers blew the game open in the fifth.  Lawrence started the rally with a double.  Candre followed with a single and both runners ended up in scoring position.  Luedtke plated both runners with a double.  Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) followed with an RBI single.  After a walk to Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek), both advanced into scoring position on a sac bunt.  Wakefield drew a walk to load the bases before Geiyer drove in a run with a single.   VanLaanen pushed home two more runs with a single.  Lawrence hit a sac fly and an unearned run capped the eight-run frame.
 
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) earned her 14th win of the year with the complete-game shutout.  She struck out four, didn't' walk a batter and scattered three hits.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 9, UWRF 1
Geiyer singled to right to begin the third inning.  Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) following with a bunt single and both moved up a base on a sac bunt by VanLaanen.  Candre laced an RBI single to left and a second run scored on a fielder's choice.
 
After UWRF tallied their lone run of the day, Traxel singled to lead off the fourth.  With two away, Geiyer drove in a run with a single and advanced to second on the throw.  She then raced home on a single by Tkach for a 4-1 advantage.
 
Geiyer blasted her first career home run with two outs in the sixth.  Her solo shot sailed out to left-center.
 
Luedtke was hit with a two-out pitch in the seventh.  After stealing second, she scored on a hit by Lawrence.  She promptly stole second ahead of a walk to Traxel.  Mackenzie Niespodzany (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) picked up an RBI with a pinch hit single.  Wakefield followed with a two-run single to complete the scoring.
 
Lauren Lindahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) tossed 1.2 scoreless frames to begin the game with a strikeout.  Tkach pitched the final 4.1 to earn her second win of the day.  She struck out two more in game two.
 
The Pointers and Falcons will play again on Sunday (May 2) at McCarty Memorial Field.  First pitch will be at 2:00 p.m.
