Pointers Run Win Streak to Seven Before Splitting at Stout

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (7-3, 3-1) ran its winning streak to seven games with a win in game one before splitting the series finale at UW-Stout (4-6, 1-3) on Friday.  UWSP won game one, 9-4, but a late rally in game two gave the Blue Devils game two, 9-7.

Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) collected four hits on the day.  He had a pair of RBI and scored two runs.  Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) had three hits, two of which were doubles.  He drove in four and scored twice.

Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) extended his hitting streak to eight games with three hits on the day.  He drove in one and had three runs scored.  Jacob Lillge (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute) went 3-for-5 in game one with a run driven in and two runs scored.

Game 1 – UWSP 9, UW-Stout 4.
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) began the game with a single to left.  After an error and a double steal, UWSP had two in scoring position.  Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) lifted a sac fly to right as the Pointers took a 1-0 lead.

Another Blue Devils' error to begin the second opened a prime scoring opportunity.  It took a two-out double by Duddleston to plate the run for a 2-0 advantage.

Lillge reached on a one-out infield single in the fourth.  A walk by Duddleston and a single by Simmons loaded the bases.  Nelson cleared the bases with a double to left.  He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to give UWSP a 6-1 lead.

In the sixth, Lillge led off with a single.  A sac bunt by Duddleston moved him into scoring position and another Stout miscue allowed him to score.

Duddleston led off the eighth with a walk.  He moved all the way to third on a wild pitch.  Another double by Nelson plated Duddleston for an 8-1 lead.

The Blue Devils scored three times in the bottom of the eighth on a trio of hits.  The Pointers tacked on a run in the ninth on an RBI single by Lillge to cap the scoring.

Zack Haupt (Carlsbad, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) picked up the win with 6.0 frames of two-hit ball.  He struck out one, the lone punchout by UWSP pitching in the game.  Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) and Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) combined for 3.0 scoreless in relief.

Game 2 – UWSP 7, UW-Stout 9
Simmons extended his hitting streak to eight with a one-out single in the third.  Nelson and Luedtke drew walks to load the bases.  Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) also drew a base on balls to push home the first run.  With two away, Baumann plated two with a double and a 3-0 lead.

Stout scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 4-3 edge.

Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) led off the sixth with a double.  Two batters later, Simmons drove him in with a single.  After a Nelson single put runners on the corners, Luedtke hit a sac fly as UWSP inched ahead 5-4.

Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) began the seventh with a single.  Baumann reached on a bunt single and both runners moved into scoring position on an error.  Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) and Boos hit consecutive sac flies to plate both runners.

The Blue Devils responded with two runs in the seventh to get within one.  In the eighth, a two-out rally netted three runs and the lead for Stout.

Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went 5.0 in the start.  Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) tossed 2.0 in relief.  Both struck out two.

The Pointers return home for a eight-game homestand beginning on Friday (April 9) with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader versus Finlandia.
