LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (6-2) swept a doubleheader from homestanding Lake Forest College (2-2) on Sunday. The Pointers scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of game one for a 7-6 win before taking game two by an 8-1 final.
Megan Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) reached base in seven of her eight plate appearances, including four hits and three walks. She drove in three runs and scored three runs.
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira),
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) and
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) had three RBI apiece on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 7, LFC 6
Luedtke led off the second inning with a walk. Lawrence followed with a single. Two batters later, Greenaberg singled through the left side to plate the first run. A double steal by Lawrence and Greenaberg plated the second run of the inning.
In the third,
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) singled to begin the frame. With two down in the inning, Luedtke doubled to push home a run. Lawrence and Geiyer continued the rally with RBI doubles as well. Greenaberg singled to drive home another run as UWSP went in front 6-0.
The Foresters plated four runs in the fifth inning on four hits and a UWSP miscue. LFC tied the game on a two-RBI triple with two away in the sixth.
In the top of the seventh,
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) singled with one away. Luedtke followed with a triple to center to drive in the winning run.
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) returned to pitch the seventh and closed out the win by retiring the side in order. She picked up her second save of the season after striking out three over 5.2 innings of work.
Lauren Lindahl (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) earned the win.
Game 2 – UWSP 8, LFC 1
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) led off the third inning with a drive into center field. The ball was dropped and got past the fielder and she raced to third base on the play.
Mackenzie Niespodzany (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) followed with a single to drive in the first run of the inning. With two away, back-to-back walks by Candre and Luedtke loaded the bases. Lawrence singled to drive in two. Geiyer followed with a double to right plating two more. Greenaberg singled to push home the sixth run of the frame.
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) started the fourth with a double to center and moved to third on a groundout. Luedtke drove her in with an RBI groundout to make it 7-0.
Lake Forest got on the board in the fifth on two hits and an error.
In the sixth, Buerger drew a leadoff walk and Candre singled. Later in the inning, a double steal plated another run.
Lindahl started and held the Foresters to one hit over 3.0 innings. Tkach tossed the final four frames with four strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
The Pointers head to Minnesota on Friday (March 12) for a doubleheader against Hamline. Game one first pitch is set for 10:00 a.m.
