ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (8-2) posted 16 runs in 12 innings to complete a sweep over Hamline (1-3) on Friday. UWSP took game one in run-rule fashion, 10-1, before earning a 6-1 victory in game two.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) had three hits in four at-bats on the day. She drove in three runs and scored another.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) also had three hits over the doubleheader. She scored a run in each game and had an RBI in game two.
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township),
Megan Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) and
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) each scored twice in game one and again in game two. The trio collected two hits apiece in the twin bill.
In the circle,
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) scattered three hits in 7.0 frames pitched on the day. She earned her fourth win of the year in game one and totalled nine strikeouts over the two games.
Game 1 – UWSP 10, Hamline 1 (5)
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) drew a walk to begin the game and advanced on a sac bunt by
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North). Candre promptly drove her home with a single up the middle. The Pointers added two more runs in the inning on a pair of Hamline errors.
Luedtke drew a leadoff walk in the fourth and moved into scoring position on a one-out single by Geiyer.
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) plated one with a double to left. Two batters later, Wakefield drove home two with a single. Traxel drove in Wakefield with a single up the middle to give UWSP a 7-1 lead.
Another leadoff walk in the fifth sparked a rally for the Pointers. Candre and Lawrence reached via bases on balls. Another miscue by the Pipers scored one.
Mackenzie Niespodzany (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) singled to drive in another.
Delaney Kunkel (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln Way West) dropped an RBI sac bunt to push the lead to 10-1.
Tkach struck out the final two batters of the game to close out the win. She faced just three over the minimum in the game with seven strikeouts.
Game 2 – UWSP 6, Hamline 1
Buerger ripped a one-out double in the bottom of the first. She advanced to third on a single by Candre and scored on an attempted double steal for a 1-0 lead.
The Pipers tied the game in the third on a walk, wild pitch and a single.
In the UWSP fourth, Candre led off with a double. Consecutive singles by Luedtke and Lawrence pushed home the go-ahead run. Geiyer followed with an RBI single. Greenaberg reached on a Hamline error to drive in another. Two batters later, Wakefield laced a single to left to put UWSP in front 5-1.
Jessie Davidenko (Plainfield, Ill./North) doubled to right center with one down in the sixth. After a single by
Kally VanLaanen (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon),
Jayden Prondzinski (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) recorded her first career RBI with a groundout.
Freshman
MacKenzie Honish (Oconto, Wis./Oconto) picked up her first collegiate win with 3.0 innings of relief. She struck out one and allowed just two hits. Tkach closed the game with 2.0 hitless frames with two strikeouts.
The Pointers next play in Madison on March 20 against the University of Chicago. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
