PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (13-6) wrapped up non-conference play with a sweep of Lakeland (0-10) on Sunday. UWSP took game one by a 7-2 final before completing the sweep with a 3-1 victory.
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) went 4-for-6 on the day with three RBI and a run scored.
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) had a hit and a run batted in in each game.
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) and
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) each had two hits in game one.
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) scored a run in each game.
Game 1 – UWSP 7, LU 2
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) led off the game with a double to left-center. Two batters later, Luedtke drove her home with a double down the left field line.
The Muskies turned a walk and two hits into a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1.
Meyers reached on a one-out infield single in the second. Pinch runner
Jayden Prondzinski (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) stole second and scored on a double by Geiyer. After a groundout moved Geiyer to third, she scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 lead.
Buerger started the third with a double down the right field line. Luedtke followed with an RBI single. Two batters later,
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) singled to push UWSP's lead to 5-1.
In the fifth,
Mackenzie Niespodzany (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) doubled with two away. Greenaberg followed suit with a double to plate Niespodzany. Meyers continued the inning with a single to score pinch runner
Gina Magro (Tower Lakes, Ill./Barrington).
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) pitched all 5.0 frames with two strikeouts to earn her seventh win of the year.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, LU 1
Traxel reached on a one-out error in the second inning. Greenaberg ripped a double to right to plate Traxel for a 1-0 lead.
Niespodzany led off the fifth with a single up the middle.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) followed with a single. After a Buerger walk, another LU error allowed a run to score. Luedtke capped the inning with an RBI single.
Makenzie Honish started and went 2.0 with a strikeout and one hit against. Tkach tossed the final 3.0 to earn the win with one strikeout.
The Pointers will resume play on April 8 with the conference opener against UW-Whitewater. First pitch at McCarty Memorial Field is slated for 2:00 p.m.
