PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – It took nine innings, but the UW-Stevens Point softball team (14-7, 1-1) opened league play with a 2-1 win at UW-Platteville (6-6, 1-1). UWSP fell in game two by a 5-3 final.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) collected four hits on the day. She scored two runs and drove in another.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) had five hits over the doubleheader, including a season-high three in game two.
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) had two extra-base hits, both in game two, with two RBI and a runs scored.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, UWP 1 (9)
Wakefield and Candre got aboard by back-to-back singles with one down in the third inning.
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) followed with a walk to load the bases.
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) singled to left to give the Pointers a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Pioneers tied the game on consecutive two-out hits.
The game remained tied until the ninth. Wakefield singled with two outs. Candre followed with a double with Wakefield scoring on a throwing error on the play.
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) picked up her ninth victory of the year with 6.2 innings pitched. She struck out four. Mackenzie Honish pitched 2.1 frames with one hit allowed.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, UWP 5
UWP turned a leadoff walk into a run in the second inning on just one hit.
Geiyer led off the third with a double to right-center.
Mackenzie Niespodzany (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) sacrificed her to third. Wakefield followed with a single to tie the game at 1-1.
The Pioneers went back in front in the bottom of the third with a trio of unearned runs. UWP added another unearned run in the fourth.
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) drew a one-out walk in the sixth.
Megan Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) followed with a base hit to center. Geiyer plated both runners with a triple to right field.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) started and pitch 3.2 innings in the game. She gave up just one hit while in the circle.
The Pointers will face UW-Oshkosh in the first home conference doubleheader on Wednesday (April 14). First pitch at McCarty Memorial Field is set for 2:00 p.m.
