ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (11-6) hung with No. 24 College of Saint Benedict (8-2), but untimely miscues allowed the homestanding Bennies to sweep the Pointers. UWSP fell in game one, 4-3, before a 7-3 defeat in game two.
Sammy Buerger (Oshkosh, Wis./North) scored two runs on the day. She was 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts and drove in a run.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had two RBI and scored a run on the day.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) collected three hits over the doubleheader.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, CSB 4
Buerger drew a two-out walk in the top of the first inning. She stole second and scored on a single by
Megan Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) for a 1-0 early lead.
Candre singled to begin the third inning. After a fielder's choice, Buerger drew another base on balls. After a double steal, both runners scored on a CSB error.
In the bottom of the third, the Bennies scored two runs on three UWSP miscues. CSB tied the game in the fifth on three hits.
The Bennies turned a leadoff walk into the winning run in the sixth after a steal and a base hit.
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) went 4.2 innings in the start. She struck out five.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, CSB 7
CSB took a 1-0 lead in the first with a single, a steal and a double. The Bennies doubled the lead in the second on a double and a UWSP error.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) began UWSP's second inning with a single.
Madi Greenaberg (Downers Grove, Ill./North) walked and
Jessie Davidenko (Plainfield, Ill./North) reached on an error to load the bases. Another CSB error plated two runs as UWSP tied the game, 2-2.
CSB manufactured a run on a pair of walks, a stolen base and an RBI fielder's choice in the third.
The Pointers rallied to tie the game in the fifth.
Rachael Wakefield (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) started the inning with a single. Two batters later,
Lauren Luedtke (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) hit a single to put runners on the corners. Buerger dropped an RBI sac bunt to tie the game at 3-3.
The Bennies turned two UWSP errors in the top of the seventh into a four-run inning to complete the sweep.
The Pointers close out non-conference action on Sunday (March 28) at Lakeland. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
