STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) posted her fifth career double-double, but the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (0-1) came up short in a 61-50 loss to visiting UW-Whitewater (1-0).
Collins scored 11 points and ripped down a game-high 11 rebounds. Fellow senior
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) led UWSP in scoring with 14 points. Freshman
Sierra Raine (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) scored eight points, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the line, with nine rebounds and two blocks.
After the Warhawks opened the game on a 10-2 run, Greenheck's lone three-pointer of the game pulled UWSP within 10-6. Collins tied the game at 10-10 and Raine scored the final four points of the first quarter to tie the game at 14-14 after 10 minutes of play.
Collins and Greenheck each scored a bucket in the second quarter, but the Pointers trailed 26-22 at the half.
Freshman
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) drilled a three-pointer midway through the third quarter, her first career made field goal, as UWSP got within three at 33-30. UWW pulled away with a 10-1 run to close the quarter.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) snapped the scoreless drought from the field, but the Warhawks built a 19-point advantage with less than seven minutes to go. Freshmen
Julia Hickey (Silver Lake, Wis./Wilmot Union) and
Anna Schoenike (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) made field goals late for their first career UWSP points.
The Pointers head to Whitewater on Friday (Feb. 5) for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff versus the Warhawks.
