RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (2-6, 2-6) ended its regular season with a 77-72 loss at UW-River Falls (4-3, 4-3) on Friday.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) led a quartet of Pointers in double figures with 19 points.
Philip Flory (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Oshkosh North) added 17, his eighth-straight game in double digits.
Peter Timmerman (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) scored 16 and
Cliff McCray (Madison, Wis./West) 12.
Flory scored five early points to give the Pointers a 7-2 edge. Timmerman buried a trio of threes as the teams swapped leads until a 34-34 tie at the half.
McCray scored 10 of his points in the second half, including a pair from behind the arc, but the Pointers trailed most of the half. Flory and Timmerman hit a three and two free throws each as the Pointers got within one with 38 seconds left. UWRF went 4-for-4 from the line while the Pointers missed the final two field goal attempts.
The Pointers travel to UW-La Crosse on Monday (March 1) for a quarterfinal matchup in the WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's). Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
