Eagles Leverage Late Run to Get Past Pointers in WIAC Tournament Opener

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (2-7) saw its season come to an end after host UW-La Crosse (7-2) used a 9-0 run late in the second half to separate for a 76-68 win over the Pointers in the quarterfinals of the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's).

UWSP had four player in double figures with Peter Timmerman (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) and Brady Wagner (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) leading the Pointers with 16 apiece. Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) and Philip Flory (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Oshkosh North) added 14 points each.

Flory scored UWSP's first five points as Pointers dug a 14-5 hole early.  Cliff McCray (Madison, Wis./West) and Wagner hit consecutive threes as the Pointers quickly got within a possession midway through the first half.

Timmerman poured in three three-pointers in an 11-point personal run for UWSP that saw the Pointers take a brief one-point edge.  UWL scored six of the final eight points of the half and UWSP trailed 32-28 at the break.

The Pointers hit seven three pointers in the second half as the teams traded leads until a 60-60 tie with 5:56 remaining.  Then the Eagles posted nine-straight points over a two-minute stretch to secure the win.

Flory etched his name in the UWSP record books tying the program record with a perfect 1.000 shooting percentage from the free through line this season.  His 41-consecutive made free throws is the second longest streak in program history.
