Huge Third Quarter Rally Propels Pointers to Sweep of UWP

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (2-2, 2-2) used a 24-4 third quarter to rally past visiting UW-Platteville (1-3, 1-3) to sweep the home and home with a 64-59 win on Friday.

Senior Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) led a trio of pointes in double figures with 15 points.  Junior Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) added 12 points while freshman Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) scored 11.  Senior Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) had a solid game with nine points and team-high seven rebounds.

The Pioneers bolted out to a 10-0 lead to begin the game before Slowik got UWSP on the board.  Campion scored five straight to cut the deficit to four, but UWP finished the quarter on an 11-3 run.

Sierra Raine (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) scored four points early in the second quarter. Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) nailed a three to account for all of UWSP's points and the Pointers were down 38-22 at halftime.

A little over a minute into the third quarter, Collins broke the seal on the monstrous comeback.  After a bucket by the Pioneers, the Pointers reeled of 18 straight to take a 42-40 lead.  Collins closed the quarter with a personal 4-0 run as UWSP led 46-42.

Slowik put up five consecutive points in the fourth to give UWSP its largest lead at 53-48.  Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) buried a three with 2:46 left, but it was a one-possession lead in the final two minutes.  The Pointers' defense did not allow a made field goal over the final two minutes and UWSP made 7-of-10 free throws over that period to seal the win.

UWSP heads to UW-Oshkosh to take on the Titans on Wednesday (Feb. 17) for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
