PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (1-2, 1-2) earned its first win of the season with a 74-69 victory at UW-Platteville (1-2, 1-2) on Wednesday.
Senior
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) led the Pointers with 14 points. Fellow senior
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) scored 10 points and both grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) scored a career-high 13 for UWSP.
Sierra Raine (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) got the Pointers on the board and three-pointers by
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) and
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) gave UWSP a 9-6 lead. Greenheck nailed a three, but UWP held a 17-14 lead after one.
Pfeifer scored eight of her points in the second quarter. A late jumper by
Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) had the Pointers in front, but five-straight by the Pioneers put UWSP down 34-32 at the break.
The Pointers scored the first seven points of the second half capped by a three by
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton). The back-and-forth game saw the teams tied at 50-50 heading to the fourth.
Collins and Greenheck cored on consecutive possession as the Pointers inched ahead, 54-52. Campion followed a block with four-straight points to give UWSP a 64-60 lead with three minutes to play, the 19th and final lead change of the game. UWSP made 6-of-8 free throw in the final minute to secure the victory.
The Pointers and Pioneers battle again at Quandt Fieldhouse on Friday (Feb. 12). Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
