STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-4, 0-2) suffered a 72-56 setback at the hands of visiting UW-Eau Claire (6-3, 1-1) on Saturday.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) once again led the Pointers in scoring with a game-high 20 points.
Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added 13 and
Brennan Timm (West Bend, Wis./West) was also in double figures with 11. Timm led UWSP with eight rebounds.
Brady Wagner (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) and Mootz made buckets on back-to-back possessions to give UWSP a 4-3 lead three minutes into the game. The Blugolds followed up with an 11-3 run and UWSP played from behind the rest of the game.
Timm and
AJ Makinen (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) hit from the field later in the half to get UWSP within five both times. Nelson completed an and-one as the Pointers trailed 39-31 at the break.
Timm scored the first points of the second half, but the Blugolds put up the next 12 points. UWSP made just three field goals over a 13 minute span as the deficit ballooned to 24 midway through the second half.
Mootz drilled a late three to get UWSP within 16 at the final buzzer.
The Pointers head out on a six-game road trip beginning on Dec. 18 at Hope College. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. ET.
