HOLLAND, Mich. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-5) fell into a 21-point hole in the first half and were unable to recover in a 71-57 loss at Hope (5-4).
Ryan Peterson (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) led the Pointers with nine points, all in the second half.
Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill),
Peter Timmerman (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) and
Brennan Timm (West Bend, Wis./West) each had eight.
Timmerman scored to begin the game as UWSP took a 2-0 lead. Later in the first half, Timmerman again gave the Pointers the lead, 9-8, with a bucket. Hope posted a 10-2 run with
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) contributing UWSP's points.
Mootz converted an and-one and Timm added a bucket as UWSP got within 18-16 midway through the first half.
AJ Makinen (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) hit a three, but UWSP was outscored 24-5 for a 42-21 halftime deficit.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) put up four early points in the second half. Peterson scored nine points in the second half, but UWSP was only able to get within 14 twice, including at the final buzzer.
The Pointers head to Indiana for a Monday (Dec. 20) game at Trine. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. ET.
