STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (7-4) fell in the 2021 home finale to visiting Carthage (7-3) by a 62-52 final.
Taylor Greenheck (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) led the Pointers in scoring with 13 points. She had a pair of blocks, two rebounds and two assists.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) was also in double-figures with 12 points.
Thomson hit a pair of free throws in the opening seconds and
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) scored as UWSP led 2-0 and 4-3 early. Greenheck converted an and-one late, but UWSP trailed 17-11 after one.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) buried a three to open the second quarter and Greenheck scored on the next possession as UWSP got within two. Late in the second quarter, Thomson and
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) hit back-to-back threes as UWSP closed to within 25-24.
Greenheck sunk a three to snap an 8-0 run by Carthage to open the third. Thomson scored five-straight and a Greenheck triple cut the deficit to single digits. A late three by
Julia Hickey (Silver Lake, Wis./Wilmot Union) and a buzzer-beating jumper by Campion got UWSP within three, 47-44, heading to the fourth.
Two free throws by Campion and a bucket by Thomson kept UWSP close early in the fourth. But a 12-0 run by the Firebirds clinched the win for the visitors.
The Pointers travel to Waverly, Iowa for the Wartburg Tournament next week. UWSP faces Coe on Dec. 29 and host Wartburg on Dec. 30 with tip-off both days slated for 3:00 p.m.
