STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-4, 1-2) overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to knock off visiting UW-River Falls (7-5, 0-3) by a 64-58 final at Berg Gym.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led the Pointers with 13 points, 11 of which came in the second half comeback. She also grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
Taylor Greenheck (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) added 12 points and
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) was also in double figures with 10.
Sierra Raine (Bloomer, Wis./Bloomer) scored eight of her nine points in the second half.
Gawlitta scored four early points and UWSP blazed ahead 8-2 midway through the first quarter. The Falcons scored 12 of the next 14 points as UWSP trailed 14-10 after one.
Greenheck and
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) each made a basket, the only two field goals of the second quarter. UWRF's Jenna Zeman was on fire from behind the arc hitting five triples as the Pointers trailed 30-16 at the half.
The Pointers came out firing in the third quarter, making 10 of 14 shots from the floor to cut the deficit to single digits. Pfeifer had six points in the quarter and
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) added five.
UWSP kept chipping away at the deficit and Pfeifer scored five-straight to get the Pointers within one, 53-52 with 3:20 to go. Raine gave the Pointers the lead with 1:13 left. The Pointers hit 8-of 10 free throws down the stretch to extend the lead to six by the final whistle.
The Pointers continue league play with a trip to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Jan. 8). Tip-off against the Eagles is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
