Trio in Double Figures as Pointers Fall at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-6) had three players in double figures, but fell at Trine (6-4) by a 65-56 final.

Brennan Timm (West Bend, Wis./West) notched his first career double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. He also added a block and a steal.

Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) led UWSP with 14 points, seven of which came at the free-throw line.  Brady Wagner (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) was also in double figures with 12 points, making two of UWSP's five three-pointers.

Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) scored just over a minute into he game as UWSP took a 2-0 lead.  The Thunder ripped off six straight before a Wagner three.  Nelson completed an and-one and scored six of UWSP's next eight as the Pointers trailed by just one, 14-13, midway through the first half.

Trine went on an 18-3 run as UWSP went cold from the field.  Mootz hit a three-pointer in the final minute to snap the dry spell, but UWSP was behind 32-19 at the half.

Mootz again started the Pointers' scoring in the second half.  After a three by Wagner and a pair of free throws by Timm, UWSP cut the deficit to eight.  But again, UWSP went cold from the field until Timm hit a layup more than four minutes later.

Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) nailed a three and UWSP was able to get within four, 45-41, at the midpoint of the second half.   The Thunder scored seven straight to push the deficit back to 11.  The Pointers made another push and after a Timm and-one, trailed by just five, 61-56 with 1:17 to go.  Trine closed out the game with the final four points, all from the charity stripe.

UWSP heads west for three games in Oregon beginning on Dec. 28 at Willamette.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT.
