ANGOLA, Ind. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-6) had three players in double figures, but fell at Trine (6-4) by a 65-56 final.
Brennan Timm (West Bend, Wis./West) notched his first career double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. He also added a block and a steal.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) led UWSP with 14 points, seven of which came at the free-throw line.
Brady Wagner (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) was also in double figures with 12 points, making two of UWSP's five three-pointers.
Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) scored just over a minute into he game as UWSP took a 2-0 lead. The Thunder ripped off six straight before a Wagner three. Nelson completed an and-one and scored six of UWSP's next eight as the Pointers trailed by just one, 14-13, midway through the first half.
Trine went on an 18-3 run as UWSP went cold from the field. Mootz hit a three-pointer in the final minute to snap the dry spell, but UWSP was behind 32-19 at the half.
Mootz again started the Pointers' scoring in the second half. After a three by Wagner and a pair of free throws by Timm, UWSP cut the deficit to eight. But again, UWSP went cold from the field until Timm hit a layup more than four minutes later.
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) nailed a three and UWSP was able to get within four, 45-41, at the midpoint of the second half. The Thunder scored seven straight to push the deficit back to 11. The Pointers made another push and after a Timm and-one, trailed by just five, 61-56 with 1:17 to go. Trine closed out the game with the final four points, all from the charity stripe.
UWSP heads west for three games in Oregon beginning on Dec. 28 at Willamette. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. PT.
