EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – For the third-straight game in Eau Claire,
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) netted the game-winning goal for the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (9-3-1, 4-1-0) as the Pointers won in overtime on Saturday, 4-3, against UW-Eau Claire (4-8-0, 2-3-0).
The Pointers fell behind in the first period as the host Blugolds scored at the 8:50 mark.
UWSP got the game even at 5:19 of the second period as Connor Witherspoon scored his fourth goal in the last three games.
David Hill (Glen Mills, Pa.) and
Brady Smith (Bloomington, Ill.) had assists on the play.
Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis.) put the Pointers ahead at 14:48 of the second, his fifth goal of the year.
Later in the second, UWEC tied the game at 2-2, where the score remained until late in the third period.
At 15:05 of the third,
Brandon McReynolds (North Vancouver, B.C.) put UWSP ahead again, 3-2, off an assist from
Sam Ayd (Grant, Minn.). The lead lasted just over two minutes as the Blugolds scored on the power play to send the game to overtime.
UWEC controlled the early part of the extra session. But with just over a minute left in overtime, Fader drove the net and forced a save. The puck was retrieved by Roo with a wraparound for the game-winner with just 1:08 left.
Ryan Wagner (Indianapolis, Ind.) had 32 saves in the game for the Pointers, including four in overtime. UWEC goaltender Riley McVeigh made 31 saves.
The Pointers will travel to Minnesota for a pair of non-conference contests on Jan 8 and 9. UWSP will play at Augsburg at 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 8.
