MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 13 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (9-4-1) forced overtime, but fell in the extra session, 4-3, at No. 4 Augsburg (13-2-0) on Saturday, UWSP's first game of 2022.
Conor Witherspoon (Metamora, Mich.) gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal just 3:36 into the game.
Carter Roo (Champlin, Minn.) and
Nicholas Aromatario (Woodbridge, Ont.) had assists on the man-advantage goal.
The lead held until the Auggies tied it with just seven seconds left in the first period. AU pulled ahead with the third power-play goal of the game at 7:30 of the second period.
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont.) tied the game again at 2-2 with a tally at 10:55 of the second period Aromatario picked up his second helper of the night and
Noah Finstrom (New Baltimore, Mich.) added the other assist.
At the 7:37 mark of the third,
Harrison Stewart (Rockford, Ill.) put the Pointers back in front. Roo had his second assist of the night and
Brady Smith (Bloomington, Ill.) had the other helper.
The Auggies tied the game with 5:02 left in regulation. Both teams had mad scrambles in front of net in the final minute, but the game went to overtime.
The host Auggies prevailed with the game-winner at 1:11 of overtime.
Eli Billing (Windsor, Ont.) made 35 saves for the Pointers. Samuel Vyletelka had 23 saves for Augsburg.
UWSP returns home to face UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Jan. 12). Puck drop at K.B. Willett Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
