WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-3, 0-1) saw its three-game win streak snapped as UW-Whitewater (4-2, 1-0) took the league opener by an 83-70 final.
Senior
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) led the Pointers with 16 points, his sixth-consecutive game as UWSP top scorer to begin the season. He also had a team-high five assists.
Freshman
Brennan Timm (West Bend, Wis./West) posted a season-high 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field.
Peter Timmerman (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Catholic) hit back-to-back buckets as UWSP tried to dig out of a 7-0 hole early. Midway through the first half,
Ryan Peterson (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) hit a three to end a 10-0 run by UWW. Peterson hit from behind the arc again right before halftime but the Pointers trailed 40-27 at the break.
Brady Wagner (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills),
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) and Peterson all buried threes as UWSP got within 45-40 five minutes into the second half. The Warhawks quickly pushed the deficit back to double figures with a 9-1 burst. Nelson and Timm scored UWSP next 17 points, but the Pointers couldn't cut the lead to single digits the remainder of the game.
The Pointers will host UW-Eau Claire in conference action on Saturday (Dec. 4). Tip-off on Bennett Court in Quandt Fieldhouse is slated for 7:00 p.m.
