Slowik’s Pivotal Three Fuels Comeback Win for Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior Jessica Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) buried a three-pointer with 2:17 left to erase an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-1) defeated Concordia (Wis.) (0-2) in the final game of the UWSP Tip-Off Classic.

Freshman Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led all scorers with 15 points in the game.  Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) recorded her third-straight double-digit scoring performance with 13 points.  Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) was also in double figures with 10.

Pfeifer got UWSP on the board and Thomson added a bucket for a 4-2 lead.  The Falcons put up six straight points and the Pointers trailed the remainder of the quarter.

Thomson had five points from the floor in the second quarter, but UWSP could close ground and trailed 29-22 at the break.

Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) made back-to-back buckets and field goals from Taylor Greenheck (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Thomson got UWSP within one twice.  But CUW scored seven-straight to take a 46-38 lead into the fourth.

Nies hit UWSP's first three field goals of the fourth quarter as the deficit teetered between five and eight.  Slowik hit a jumper and Thomson drilled a three as UWSP gained a brief 50-49 edge.  Then with 2:17 left, Slowik hit from behind the arc to give UWSP a 55-53 lead.  The Pointers hit 10-of-12 free throws and CUW made just one field goal the rest of the game as UWSP pulled away late.

The Pointers close out the four-game home stand on Saturday (Nov. 20) against Luther.  Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
