Pointers Lose Steam, Fall in OT in Tip-Off Classic Opener

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (2-1) saw a seven-point lead to begin the fourth quarter evaporate as the Pointers fell to Benedictine (1-1) in overtime, 71-68, to open the UWSP Tip-Off Classic.

Senior Taylor Greenheck (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) led the Pointers with 15 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) tied a career-high with 11 points and led UWSP with five assists.  Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) was in double-figure scoring again with 10 points.

Nies scored six of UWSP's first eight points as the teams were deadlocked at 10-10 in the first quarter.  Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) scored four-straight to cap a 7-2 run, but UWSP held just a 17-16 edge after one.

Greenheck buried a three in a 7-2 spurt to open the second quarter.  Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis. /North) popped a three in the final minute as UWSP took a 31-24 lead into halftime.

Campion drilled a three to start a personal 7-0 run for the Pointers.  Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) buried a three late and UWSP held the seven-point edge heading to the fourth.

Greenheck made UWSP's first field goal of the fourth midway through the quarter.  Campion followed with a basket, but the Eagles forged into the lead with 30 seconds left.  Greenheck tied the game at 60-all with 16 ticks left to send the game to overtime.

Benedictine scored six of the first eight points in the extra session before Greenheck pulled UWSP within two with a minute left.  Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) nailed a three with 16 seconds left to get UWSP within 68-67, but her desperation three at the buzzer was off target in the 71-68 defeat.
