WHEATON, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (19-4) won a pair of four-set matches at the Wheaton Tri on Saturday to complete an unbeaten weekend in the Land of Lincoln. UWSP opened the day with a win over Elmhurst before taking down host Wheaton.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) continued her phenomenal week compiling 40 and 42 assists, respectively, on the day. She had a season-high 12 digs versus Elmhurst and had 11 against Wheaton for her third and fourth double-doubles of the year.
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) up a season-high 23 kills against EC. She then posted her 13th double-double of the year versus WC with a team-best 12 kills adding 16 digs.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led the team in digs in both matches with 20 and 22.
Katie Albrecht (West Bend, Wis./East) was in double-digits in both matches with 10 and 15.
UWSP 3, Elmhurst 1 (25-22, 25-22, 13-25, 25-17)
Michalske served up consecutive aces as UWSP jumped ahead 4-0 in the first set.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) added four kills as UWSP built a 16-8 advantage en route to a first-set win.
Kopp combined on a block and served up an ace as the Pointers took a 5-1 lead in the second. She posted another ace amid a six-point burst as UWSP went ahead 19-15. Tied at 22-22, Kopp blasted three-straight kills to put UWSP up, 2-0.
Elmhurst used runs of five and 10 in the third set to pull away for a set win.
Abby Neutz (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) had an early kill and a block as the Pointers went up 9-5 in the fourth.
Madyson Schroeder (Green Bay, Wis./Bayport) got an ace in an 8-1 run to close the set and Michalske finished the match fittingly with another ace.
UWSP 3, Wheaton 1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 25-18)
Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) bookended a 10-3 run with kills as UWSP pulled ahead 18-13 in the first set.
Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) put set one in the win column for the Pointers with her third kill.
Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) posted a trio of kills in the second set, but UWSP played from behind most of it as the Thunder evened the match at a set apiece.
Neutz had three early kills as the Pointers opened an 11-4 lead in the third set. UWSP closed the set win with six-straight points punctuated by three-straight aces from
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill).
Belfiori served up her sixth ace of the match in a four-point run as UWSP took a 20-12 lead in the fourth set. Neutz closed the match with her fourth and fifth kills of the set.
UWSP returns home to face Carroll on Friday (Oct. 15). The 6:00 p.m. match will be a Gold Out, sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts.
