STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (2-6, 0-5) put up the first points but visiting No. 13 UW-La Crosse (7-1, 5-0) scored 56 unanswered to hand UWSP its sixth-straight loss, 56-3.
UWSP quarterback
Trey Schroeder (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) completed 13 passes and led the Pointers rushing attack with 14 attempts.
Defensively, it was
Kameron Kryzanski (Thorp, Wis./Thorp) with a game-high 12 tackles, his fifth-straight game leading all tacklers.
The Pointers were forced to punt just four plays into the game.
Carter Unger's (Waukesha, Wis./South) boot hit a blocker and Jeffrey Williams pounced on the fumble to put UWSP in UWL territory. Nine plays later,
Victor Ponterio (Melrose, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) put a 30-yard field goal through the uprights for a 3-0 UWSP lead.
The Eagles need just six plays to find the end zone and take the lead. UWL would score touchdown on three consecutive possessions for a 21-3 lead.
In the second quarter, the Eagles were on the move again. On a second-and-goal play,
Tyler Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) came away with a fade pass in the end zone for an interception and a touchback.
After a three-and-out by the UWSP offense, Unger's punt was returned 62 yards for a touchdown as UWL led 28-3 at the half.
Ponterio again gave the Pointers a boost with an onside kick and he made the recovery to start the second half. But a sack fumble on third down gave UWL the ball right back. The Eagles need just three plays to find the end zone. A pick-six on the next UWSP possession pushed the score to 42-3.
Two more scores by the Eagles in the fourth quarter completed the scoring. UWL did not punt in the game.
The Pointers travel to UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Nov. 6) for the final road game of the season. Kickoff at Titan Stadium is slated for 1:00 p.m.
