Pointers Secure Three-Seed with Four-Set Win in League Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (24-6, 4-3) locked up the three-seed in the WIAC Tournament with a four-set victory over UW-La Crosse (19-10, 4-3) in the conference finale for both teams.

Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) tied for the game-high with 22 kills on the night.  She added 15 digs, for her 15th double-double of the year.

Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led all players with 21 digs in the match.  She is now just nine shy of becoming just the fourth player in UWSP history with 1,500 career digs.

Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) posted her sixth 40-assist night of the year with a game-high 45 on Friday.

Kopp had two early kills and Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) served up the first of her two aces for a 7-2 lead in the first set.  Mena combined with Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) on a block to give UWSP a 16-9 lead.  UWL climbed to within one late, but Kopp and Derousseau each had a pair of late kills for a 25-22 win in set one.

Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) had an ace amid a 6-1 run as the Pointers took an 11-6 lead in the second set.  Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had three kills later in the set, but the Pointers couldn't shake the Eagles.  Kopp again came through with two kills and Mena finished off the set with a kill for the 25-21 win.

Mena and Kopp gave UWSP a tepid 7-6 edge in the third set, but UWL went on a 9-3 run.  Abby Neutz (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) downed a couple kills and Kopp added three more kills, but UWSP only got within on before UWL pulled off the set win, 25-19.

Belfiori served up another ace to cap a 5-1 run as UWSP tied the fourth set at 17-17.  It was the Kopp show late as she blasted three kills, including the match-clincher, while adding an ace for the 25-22 win.

The Pointers close out the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 30) against Carthage.  The match is slated for 2:00 p.m. and UWSP will honors its five seniors in a pregame ceremony.

Friday's win give the Pointers the three-seed in the WIAC Tournament and a home match on Tuesday (Nov. 2).  UWSP will face UW-Platteville at 7:00 p.m. in Berg Gym.
