Volleyball Rallies For Five-Set Win as Peterson Reaches Digs Plateau

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) became just the fourth player in school history to record 1,500 career digs as the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (25-6) rallied for a five-set win over Carthage (19-12) in the regular season finale.

Peterson had 18 digs in the match and needed just nine to reach 1,500 entering the match.

Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) posted yet another double-double, her 16th of the year.  She led all players with 21 kills and was right behind Peterson with 17 digs.  She also had three aces.

Grace MIchalske tied her season-high with 48 assists.

Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert) had five kills in the first set and the lead teeter back and forth all set.  After a Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) ace tied the set at 23-23, but Carthage pulled out the first set, 25-23.

Syndey Mosinski had four kills and Kopp added five in the second set as UWSP evened the match with a 25-21 set win.

Kopp had four kills and an ace in the third set, but the Firebirds played from ahead most of the set for a 25-23 win.

Mosinski and Kopp combined for four kills as UWSP doubled up Carthage early in the fourth, 6-3.  After the Firebirds rallied to tie the set at 21-all, Abby Neutz (Annandale, Minn./Annandale) had a kill and Kopp added two more to send the match to the fifth with a 25-23 win.

Kopp and Mosinski reeled off three-straight kills as UWSP opened the fifth up 4-0.  Kopp again had two kills bookending a 5-1 run as UWSP led 11-6.  Carthage pulled within one and thwarted two UWSP match points before a service error gave the Pointers a 15-13 victory.

UWSP will host a WIAC Tournament quarterfinal match against UW-Platteville on Tuesday (Nov. 2) at 7:00 p.m. in Berg Gym.
