OSHKOSH, Wis. – Freshman
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had yet another double-double, this time leading all players with 20 kills and 25 digs, but the No. 21 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (20-6, 3-3) dropped a five-set match at UW-Oshkosh (15-10, 3-2) on Wednesday.
Kopp's double-double was her 14th of the season and she now leads the WIAC in kills (373) this season.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) also had a double-double with a career-best 48 assists and 12 digs.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) with 24 and
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) with 10 were also in double figures in digs.
Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) added 10 kills.
Megan Lau (Potter, Wis./Hilbert), Kopp and Derousseau had consecutive kills as UWSP used a 4-0 run to pull ahead early in the first set. Kopp sparked a 5-0 run with a kill as the Pointers broke an 11-11 tie. Kopp had two more kills and two aces in an 8-1 run late as UWSP took the first set 25-16.
Derousseau and
Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) combined for a block as the Pointers started a 4-0 run to go up 7-4 early in the second set.
Katie Albrecht (West Bend, Wis./East) served up an ace to give UWSP a 16-11 advantage, but the Titans battled back to tie the set at 20-all. Mena had a kill and a block late to cap a 5-1 run as UWSP took set two, 25-21.
Belfiori, Mena and Michalske each had an ace early as UWSP played catch-up in the third set. The Pointers got within one twice, but UWO took the third set, 25-20.
Lau had a kill early in the fourth set as UWSP took a 4-0 lead.
Sophia Lee (Lake Mills, WIs./Lake Mills) had four kills as the team traded leads, but the Titans forced a fifth set with a 25-22 win.
Kopp had four kills as the Pointers opened the fifth set with a 10-4 lead. UWO finished the match on an 11-3 run as UWSP mustered just one kill down the stretch.
The Pointers head to Illinois for the final road matches of the regular season. UWSP will take on Alma at 5:00 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 22) in the first day of the IWU Tournament.
