STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Freshman
Ashley Kopp's (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) game-high 15 kills wasn't enough for the No. 21 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (20-5, 3-2) against No. 9 UW-Whitewater (20-1, 4-1) on Saturday. The Pointers fell in straight sets (25-20, 25-15, 25-21).
Kopp led all players with 15 kills. She also tied
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) for the team-high in digs with eight.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) kept rolling along with 27 assists, her 19th-straight match in double figures.
Reis Derousseau (Tomah, Wis./Tomah) had a game-high three blocks.
Kopp had a pair of early kills and
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) gave UWSP a 9-7 lead with a kill of her own. But a 5-0 run by the Warhawks put UWSP behind. Kopp added three more kills as the Pointers evened the first set at 16-16. UWW scored nine of the next 13 points to secure the first set.
UWSP fell behind early in the second set, but Kopp poured in four kills to get the Pointes within 13-9.
Guresi Mena (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) added three kills in the set, but the Warhawks held off the Pointers for a 2-0 lead.
Mosinski had a block and two kills early in the third to give UWSP a 4-1 lead. Mosinski added another kill later to spark a 5-0 run as the Pointers tied the set at 18-all. Again, UWW closed strong with seven of the final 10 points to end the match.
The Pointers head out for the final road swing of the regular season beginning with a Wednesday (Oct. 20) match at UW-Oshkosh. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
